Who can log in, and why you should sign up for ess northwell
If you are part of a Northwell Health organization, then you can log in to the portal. If not and still want to access some information from your organization on their system, please contact them directly for credentials or permission to use their account with us.
The first time you login using this process it will ask for both password (your NSLIJ ESS Portal User ID) and Personal Identification Number (PIN). Please make sure that these two pieces of information match before proceeding any further! You must have an active email address associated with your user profile as well so they know who is logging into the system.

How to set up an account with The NSLIJ ESS Portal
If you are an international student, faculty member, or staff member wishing to set up a ESS Northwell login account with the new system in order to gain access and use your respective accounts on the new portal (such as accessing email), follow these steps:
Step One – Register for either “Faculty/Staff” or “Student”. The registration process is identical for both of those service levels. They recommend selecting Students if you think that you will be coming soon as they can get started more quickly than Faculty/Staff members who may already have been at Northwell Health prior to this transition. You should only register once! Instructions below detail how students may register using a new account. Faculty/Staff may create their own new accounts by going to the “Register” page and selecting either faculty or staff from the drop-down box on the left side of that screen.
Step Two – Accept Terms & Conditions (T&C) Agreement, Faculty/Staff should also read through these terms before clicking the “I AGREE” button below as they may have different requirements than students do after agreeing to T&Cs. Students must accept T&Cs when registering or updating their existing account information but Faculty/Staff members will be prompted to read them upon initial login into ESS Portal any time after registering.
Step Three – Create a Password, Students should have their own password to access ESS Northwell Portal but Faculty/Staff members will be asked to create one when they first ESS Northwell login or during the account update process. This is the only part of this registration that is mandatory for both student and faculty/staff accounts, so please make your passwords strong with at least eight characters (letters and numbers). They recommend starting by thinking about what you would like your new favorite song as well as an adjective describing yourself such as fearless, ambitious, etc., then use those words in succession to help remember it! Step Four – Set up Security Questions
Students need to set up security questions that will be used for the ESS Northwell Login process in case they forget their password or cannot access their email as well as other system-level functions. Faculty/Staff members are not required to do this step unless you would like them to, but please remember that if you choose “No” your account (username and password) may become inactive after a certain period of time without usage because it is an additional layer of account protection against unauthorized use.
If left blank then there is no requirement for Faculty/Staff members at Northwell Health to provide any answers, so input what best suits your needs! For example: What was the name of your first pet? What was the first movie you saw in theaters with a friend? What is your favorite color or type of flower?
Step Five – Click Submit Once all necessary information has been entered and accepted, be sure to click “submit” when finished. You will then see an email from NSLIJ ESS Portal that confirms your account registration for Faculty/Staff at Northwell Health. Please add this email address as a trusted sender in your email preferences so that future emails are automatically saved into inbox rather than deleted or moved elsewhere (e.g., spam).
Step Six – Now go to essnorthwell.aetna.com and enter your username and password information that you created during the registration process in Step Five above for Faculty/Staff at Northwell Health as well as any security questions if applicable. This area will show all of your account information such as benefits enrollment, HSA withdrawals or contributions, current coverage eligibility status with Blue Cross Blue Shield on NYS-AETNA plans plus more!

If you are in Northwell Health, please go back to your school registration website (for example, collegeboard), input your ESS ID number found at the near bottom right corner of this email into an email address field on your school site, ESS Northwell Login with your username and password information for that site, then click submit. You will be prompted to select which country-hosted university you attended. If it is not listed here you can type “Northwell” where it asks what institution you attended. You will then see an option to select “Northwell Health” from that list of schools and click submit again at www.northwell.edu.
If this is your first time ESS Northwell Login on the new portal, enter a username and password that are both of at least eight characters long with letter and number combinations for added security.
